Dr. William “Bill” Ambrose

Dr. William “Bill” Ambrose is a 1968 graduate of Jefferson City High School.  In 1972, he graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Missouri – Rolla with Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering In 1977 he graduated with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, “With Highest Honors,” from the University of Missouri – Kansas City.  He practiced dentistry in Jefferson City, from 1977 until 2010 and was elected to membership in the International College of Dentists in 1985.  Since 2010, he has been an avid Trail of Tears researcher, focusing on the Missouri experience. 

Working either in association or under the sponsorship of the Missouri Humanities, the Missouri State Archives, and as an officer of the Missouri Chapter Trail of Tears Association, he has presented at least a dozen hour long presentations about the Trail of Tears in Missouri across the state, and at two national Trail of Tears conferences. In 2022 he was selected by the Missouri State Historical Society and the Missouri Humanities to be a member of the Missouri Speaker’s Bureau.

It was Bill’s idea to leverage the power of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to the problem of precisely mapping sites and artifacts locates along the various routes the Trail of Tears took through the state of Missouri. As an avid amateur historian Bill has written numerous monographs about the events, lands and people of early Missouri who played a role in the Trail of Tears events.
